"The Great Gatsby" ,directed by Baz Luhrmann, starred actors and actresses like Leonardo Di Caprio as Jay Gatsby,Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway,Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan, and Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. The movie came out on 2013 and was originally planned to be filmed in New York City, the same location from the book itself but was later moved to Fox Studios in Australia.Filming started on September 5, 2011 and ended on December 22,2011.The movie was made with a budget of $105 million.
The story of the movie revolves around the life of Nick Carraway who fought in WWI and is taking treatments for alcoholism. He then writes all of the events that happened back to the time when he was with Gatsby and all of the experiences and things he saw in that time period.Gatsby's main goal was to get Daisy to leave her husband Tom and come with him so they could be happy together.Nick is then stuck in the middle of 4 rich New Yorkers and watch them try to manipulate each other to get what they want.Gatsby never got Daisy to come with him and his downfall came when Daisy killed Tom's mistress.Daisy ran over Myrtle and Jay tried to cover her up so she doesn't get in trouble.Tom sees his chance to get rid of Gatsby by putting all the blame onto him.Gatsby is then killed by Myrtle's husband thinking that Jay did the crime.
Leonardo Di Caprio's performance in this movie was simply amazing. He made his character look mysterious which is how Gatsby was supposed to be.He gave sophistication to Jay Gatsby by the way he talks and we all know him from other romantic leading characters such as romeo and jack and that gave his role as Gatsby more romantic appeal and he used that to match Gatsby's goal of becoming rich for the purpose of proving himself to the girl he loves.Meanwhile Tobey Maguire gave Nick a clear distinction from the rest of the main characters. He stood out as the "regular guy" from the group he was not as rich looking as the others and Maguire acted accordingly. The directors vision was to show us that Gatsby did everything for Daisy he became the rich and powerful man he is just for Daisy he made a scene where Gatsby was staring into the Buchanan's house and reaching out symbolizing that he was reaching for his love across the bay.The director really wanted to show how the rich people were controlling the people below them and how they can easily manipulate people to their favor, This is shown when Tom puts the blame on Jay when Myrtle died and this is also shown when Gatsby was trying to talk Daisy into leaving Tom.The main vision of the movie that the director was trying to make the viewers see was the strong power of love that has taken over Jay Gatsby and how we would go through everything even sacrificing his freedom just so he can see and make sure that Daisy is safe and happy.
The movie has received mixed criticism mostly negative. Some critics said that it didn't really show what the roaring 20s was all about.I personally think that the movie was amazing, this is one of my favorite movies and I like the fact that the movie was exactly how i envisioned the scenes while reading the book. The mysterious vibe that Gatsby gave off made me really want to read or watch a separate movie about him and his past and just everything about his life. The scene that stood out to me was Gatsby's death scene it showed that even in his finaly seconds he was still thinking about Daisy.Gatsby's final word was Daisy and the last thing he ever saw was her house and the green light that symbolized her. This scene showed Gatsby's love and the fact that he spent most of his life trying to get the girl oh his dreams and failing. I highly recommend this movie for its symbolism and iconic characters and a look back at the roaring 20s.
