A very difficult question would be, what separates a mediocre movie from an outstanding one? Whole hearted emotion always sorts the average makings out. The truly memorable movies typically have important messages and meanings behind them. The movie that I have chosen to review is The Pursuit of Happyness. Directed by Gabriele Muccino and released to the public on December 15th, 2006, The Pursuit of Happyness was a major tear jerker to all of those who watched. Decidedly it was produced with a budget of fifty-five million dollars. That particular budget allotted the following actors and actresses to be chosen for the cast: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Thandie Newton, Brian Howe, Dan Castellaneta, James Karen, Kurt Fuller, and Takayo Fisher. The main character, played by Will Smith, is named Christopher Gardner. Throughout the movie Chris has had curveball after curveball thrown at him. His primary job to begin was independently selling bone density scanners. Sales were not going as planned and Chris landed an unpaid internship as a stockbroker. When money is stretched tight in the Gardner household, Chriss wife Linda, portrayed by Thandie Newton, moves out, leaving Chris on his own with their son Christopher and little income. Ironically, Chris Gardners sons role is filled by Will Smiths real life son, Jaden Smith. From that point on in the film, Chris has scanners stolen on a couple of occasions, gets evicted from his home, fights for shelter, can barely support his son, almost loses his job at the office, and then in one final attempt beats all odds and receives the job opening. If You’re a fan of the little guy, this movie is a must see for you. It specifically is captured in a way that is appealing to underdog lovers. Being filmed in San Francisco, California, it has all the right culture and components that really wow the crowd. I selected this particular movie for a multitude of reasons. This movie is outstanding because it relies heavily on the never give up attitude, it shows that money and happiness do not have to tie hand in hand, and that hard work has never done anyone wrong.
My first point of greatness that came from this movie is that Mr. Christopher Gardner never gave up on the dream of a better life. Adversity is a majorly difficult thing to overcome time after time again. He did it beautifully with grace and honor. I personally could not imagine dealing with even a single concept that he endured. This man seems like a modern day superman to me. Chris Gardner did anything he could for his son. He was taken away from house and home and still managed to be presentable and collective in the workplace. Mr. Gardner slept on the bathroom floor of a train station because he had nowhere else to go. After being quite literally hit by a car while rushing to work, he then continued to run all the way there with only one shoe on. He never gave up. He could be compared to a train that keeps chugging.
My second point is that it backs up the belief that money can’t buy happiness. One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie takes place in the empty train station. With no bed to take comfort in, Chris had no idea where to safely place his son for the night. Together, they played a game of imagination that left little Christopher bubbly and happy beyond humanly possible. Throughout the entire movie Chris and Christopher found joys in the little things and held onto the most precious things in life, each other. I’ve come to find out through my seventeen years that the best things in life are free. Happiness is the greatest gift in the world, and there is no physical price tag that you can place on it that would even slightly capture its true worth.
My final and most important point that is hit strongly in this movie is that hard work has never placed anyone in the hole. After Chris Gardner breaks his back each and every day, he finally catches a break. He didn’t have anything he received in life just handed to him. Chris worked extremely hard for everything he claimed as his. He put in extra time, extra hours, extra effort, extra everything in the workplace. Through flat out determination and going the extra mile he received the job that nineteen other individuals with much more experience were also striving for. This movie can teach many needed lessons to the younger generation that don’t know what its like to slave for all glorifications in their lives.
The Pursuit of Happyness is iconic on many different levels. Based entirely off of a true story, I believe that it is a wonderful watch for all ages. Since its premiere ten years ago, it has received a bundle of awards. These awards include: MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie- Drama, Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie- Chemistry, Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actor- Drama, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture, Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role- Male, and ASCAP Film and Television Music Award for Top Box Office Films. This movie should possess a positive recommendation anytime it is brought up in topic. If you havent seen it yet, you are truly missing out!
