The Blind Side is my all time favorite movie. It was directed by John Lee Hancock and produced by Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Gil Netter. The cast list includes some big names including Sandra Bullock who plays Leigh Anne Tuohy and Tim McGraw who plays Sean Tuohy. Lily Collins and Jae Head play the Tuohy kids. They play Collins and S.J. tuohy. Quinton Aaron plays the main character Michael Oher. There were many other characters that play college football coaches and teachers and Michael's school. The Blind Side was released in November 2009 and the movie earned $20.4 million the first weekend in the box office. The budget of the entire movie was $29 million dollars. It was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. This movie touches peoples hearts especially because it is based on real-life events.
Michael Oher (Big Mike) is homeless living on different peoples couches while going in and out of schools because he couldn’t pass classes. When he gets to Wingate high school, he meets the Tuohys who take him into their home and eventually become his legal guardians. He changes their lives and they change his lives. His grades get better and he discovers his amazing ability to play football. We see his struggles through poor grades and learning the sport of football. Colleges start to notice his ability with the sport and alla are trying to get him on their team. Big Mike ends up choosing Ole Miss and there is an internal investigation because people believe the Tuohys (who are big supporters of Ole Miss) pushed him to that decision. It ends up being dropped because Michael decides that is really where he wants to go to play.
Race plays a big part of this movie because Michael is a large black boy moving to a school that is dominated by white children. Michael is also at a different social class than most people in the school and area he is living which leaves people thinking Leigh Anne Tuohy is crazy for bringing him in. This movie shows lots of different emotions and lots of different interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. We see that Leigh Anne has to get Michael to open up about where he is from to be able to go find him clothes. After he is questioned by the investigators, she also has to listen to him and what he would like to do about his football career. She puts her personal feelings aside to give him what he wants which shows that by the end of the movie her love really grew for that boy and that he is really part of her family. A lot of intrapersonal communication happens throughout the movie from all the characters especially Big Mike and Leigh Anne. Collins also shows a lot of that because she is a popular white girl who just had a large black boy move into her family. We see her in a scene in the library when she moves to sit with Big Mike, so he is not alone. It took her awhile to come to terms with that big change. The flashbacks also gave the audience such a real feel of what Michael went through before he met the Tuohys.
The vision of the director was for the facts of the true story to reach the public. He wanted the story to touch peoples hearts and change the way the see different races and social classes. At the end of the movie, there are pictures of boys around Michaels age that had died and it showed the viewers just what would've happened to him if it wasn’t for the Tuohys. Hancock, the director, was dedicated to the story and to making sure people saw the real story and the real people.
Being based on a true-story, this movie is well made and a success, but some critics thought different. According to IMDb, The Blind Side got 7.7 out of 10 stars and the metascore was 53. Some say that the movie was too straight-forward and that the movie came up short to Bullocks performance. Some said it wasn’t dull, but it wasn’t more than gently entertaining. I personally believe that the movie was heartfelt and touching. Every time I watch it, I get so involved in the movie recognizing new details every time. I believe that Sandra Bullock played an amazing role in this movie and I believe that the camera angle captured some feelings in the movie. I really thought the flashbacks also played a big role in the mood of the story. I believe this movie was well directed and very sincere. I would recommend this movie to anyone of any age, because it shows you the different sides of people.
